로버트 알트만의 초기작인 이 영화는
한국전쟁을 배경으로 하고있는데
한국의 이미지를 왜곡했다고해서 상당히 비난을 받았었다.

영화의 주요등장인물인 페인리스 폴이 자살하는 장면에서 흘러나오는 곡으로MASH OST의 백미

M.A.S.H.는 이동 외과 야전 병원(Mobile Army Surgical Hospital)의 약자이다. 한국 전쟁시의 어느 미군 야전병원을 무대로 해서, 두명의 괴짜 군의관을 중심으로 펼쳐지는 요절 복통의 코메디이다. 그러나 단순한 코메디가 아니라 인간성의 허구, 군내의 부조리 등을 날카롭게 꼬집어 풍자와 해학이 넘치는 블랙 코메디 걸작으로 꼽히는 작품이다. 비평과 상업적 성공으로, 후에 TV 시리즈로 만들어져 알란 알다라는 스타를 탄생시키면서 12년간 방영되는 대히트를 기록했다. 주제가 "Suicide Is Painless"는 한동안 금지곡이었다. 이 영화가 비록 한국전을 무대로 하고는 있지만, 당시의 시대적 상황을 보아서 사실은 월남전을 풍자한 것이라는 사실은 널리 알려진 이야기다. 칸느 영화제 그랑프리 수상. 국내에 '맛슈'라는 제목으로 극장 개봉이 되었는데, 이때 재미있는 에피소드가 있다. 당시로서는 워낙 센세이셔널한 내용에다, 섹스에 연관된 내용이 너무 많아서 수입이 불허되었는데, 어느 수입업자가 조건을 붙였다. 검열에서 아무리 잘라도 아무말하지 않겠다고. 그래서 70년대 초 대한민국의 서슬이 시퍼렇던 가위질을 받게 되었는데, 무려 40분이 잘려나가 1시간 20분짜리의 앞뒤의 줄거리 연결도 안되는 영화가 되어버렸다. 그래서 관객들의 항의에다가 환불요구 시비까지 벌어지고 그 업자는 돈만 날리고 말았다는 얘기.주바리 AFI가 선정한 영화사 100년의 100대 영화 주제곡
